Well, I finally bit the bullet and had my (left) BKA on January 5. Surgery went beautifully - better than textbook. However, I woke up about 3 a.m. the morning after my surgery and felt EVERYTHING!! I'd had two catheters placed that were supposed to keep me numb for 5 days. However, both of them somehow displaced and weren't working at all. So instead of going home the day after surgery I had an epidural placed and stayed until Saturday. I had my first cup fitting on Wednesday (2/16) and it went fabulous. So I should have my foot on Friday!!! I can't wait to get off of these crutches!! I had the old kind and then switched last week to the millineum crutch. They are awesome!! They give you a little boost so you move better and they are ergonomically fit to you body. Definitely worth the $50 on Amazon.
I have to say my husband, children, and family have all been fabulous through this. I fell directly on my stump a couple weeks ago and my friend helped me get my pants off and she checked out my stump just like it was nothing! I can't thank her enough for that. Luckily no damage was done, but I had words come out of my mouth that I didn't know I knew. My stump is completely healed and shrinking nicely. I'll post pics shortly. Can't wait to walk next week. I've never walked without a limp before ( for 37 years). This should be interesting. I wish I'd videoed myself walking before the amputation. Oh well!!!
