Im a right leg above knee amputee. I live in a big city and dont own a car but I was always renting cars to go far places and on vacation before the surgery, I know you can have a car custom made with hand pedals but like I stated, I dont own a car...I rent them. I know its illegal to drive with a prosthetic but what about driving with the right leg? I assume it can be done but is it legal? Any thoughts?

I'm a lbk, my license requires that I either drive an automatic or wear a pros. I know aks from the prosthetist's waiting room, who either have a left accelerator pedal installed or who just drive left footed. They do just fine either way. Especially easy if you have a "pinlock" type of pros to just take it off when you get in, drive lefty, and put it on when you want to get out. If you're not wearing a pros, one foot driving is easy. Hi John, I assume you meant "what about driving with the LEFT leg?" I am also a right above amputee and I drive unmodified cars all of the time with my left leg. Many right leg amputees use a left foot accelerator (a gas pedal on the left side of the brake pedal), but I have just learned to use the stock pedals- I just sit a little bit cross ways in the seat so I can reach the gas pedal with my left foot comfortably. As for the legality, I'm not a lawyer, but if there was an accident, I'm sure it would be far better to have been driving with a real left foot rather than driving with the prosthetic. For me, driving with the left foot was awkward for the first week/100 miles, but it seems completely natural to me now. My prosthetist is a right below knee amputee and also drives with his left foot. Erik |

i drive with my prosthetic on , it is a suction type ...and i never take it off to drive ..... i guess it may depend on the type of car ....i just sit with it bent and against the door (remember i drive a right hand drive car) ....but when i was in canada last year i drove just fine in a left hand drive car as well )....just get yourself a big old yank tank ...and you will be fine . cheers mate blair |

Hi John I am a RBKA and I currently drive with hand control (weakness and loss of sensation in my left leg) I suggest you visit the site of the attached link which offer a mobile solution which can be installed at about 5 minutes on any automatic car. www.english.fds-sys.com/Portable_Left_Foot_Accelerator.html Best regards CK |
