amputees sports olympics and running

In following up to Mr. Pistorius trying to run in the Olympics, I was reminded of this article I read a few years ago.  It appears that some were saying he had an unfair advantage years ago.  The artilce link is:

I believe with the concept of prosthetics and competing in sports, if it is used to replace a missing part, that is ok, but if it is used to add (such as making one taller than they normally would be) then I think one is painting the grey areas of the rules to one's advantage when competing with others.

It is sad to see that integrated competitions with non-amputees is being limited. I have gotten more personal growth by going to able-bodied tournaments than competing in disabled tournaments. It greatly helps one's self-image, for the competition in sports can be a microcosm of life, and in life, a great mix of people show that we are all interacting together.  However, one still has to follow the spirit of the rules, and if necessary, start a process to have the rules keep up with the technology so everyone can be judged on a level playing field.  I believe that Mr. Pistorius has done a lot for all amputees and handicapped people in all aspects of life with his running and news... I know that he has made my social interactions easier when meeting new people who find out I am an amputee.

I am interested to see what others think and feel about this.

Donnie, Thank you so much for the info. That is more than the prosthtist told me. He did tell me that the suction liner is socially unacceptable, whatever that means. I personally think that this Kiss-lock is unacceptable. My hip just aches when I walk on this. Thanks again. Arlene

    get this,

my crazy kid did the same thing AT THE HOSPITAL. we decided to have a picnic 2 days post op from her pretty hard-core revision last week. at the scottish rite they have this big gazebo and it is built up pretty high and made of rock and brick. it has these cool ramps for wheel chairs. one is like a series of moguls(?) i ran upstairs to get other kids, and the other parents, not fully appreciating the crazy nature of cate, turned their backs on her. mind you, she had had the wheelchair (her first) for 1 day. they heard squealing and turned around and cate was hauling a-- down that ramp. thank god she had the little seat belt on because she was stopped by a bush hedge and tipped half way over. she was surely being watched over by someone or something that day. when i got back to the park the other parents looked like they'd seen a ghost and sheepishly told me the story. cate and i just laughed, that is until she asked me if she could do it again.

thanks for the info. 8 weeks sounds like a long time, but i hope you are included the time needed to build a new leg post surgery.
