seems we are in the middle of a big snow storm (again), and then next week we will have below zero temps.
To top it off I lost my gloves, so now I need to modify another pair (I don't tie shoes well, much less thread for gloves).

Gary I know what you mean about sewing, etc. with the finger stumps - have you tried instead just pulling the excess finger length from the glove into the glove? I've done this with a number of gloves to get the excess/unfilled fingers out of the way and it's worked quite well, especially with knitted and cotton gloves. You may want to give it a try.
