    Oh the places you'll go...

As a part of my job, I will begin travelling in the very near future.  This will entail flying on commercial airlines again - something I haven't done since the BKA.

And, what with the post-9-1-1 world, I can't help but wonder a bit about how flying the friendly skies will be.  I mean, when they ask me to take off my shoes during the pre-boarding procedures, do I just go ahead and pop off the leg and hand it to the screener?

I think of the scene in the movie, "Airplane!", when the guy is trying to go through the metal-detector, and first takes off his hand, then his leg, then...

I wonder if I need a statement from my doctor to allow me to board the plane with "RoboLeg-3" on?

And, God forbid, if there's some emergency and I have to slide down the chute, do I pop off the leg first?  What do I do when I get to the ground?

Yeah, I know, 'much ado about nothing".  It'll probably be fine.

    Hey Gary,

I travel quite a bit and I just take off my shoes and send them through the xray machine, and when I walk up to the guy at the metal detector, I just tell him my situation, he'll have you walk through the detector and hand wand you, then send you to the "penalty box" as I like to call it, where another screener will come in there and pat you down, then swipe your hands and leg with these little cotton pad thingys and go put them through the machine. As long as you don't have any explosive residue on you leg, they'll send you on your way. Only takes another couple minutes than the 2-footed people, no big deal, and it's nothing they don't deal with on a daily basis.

3rd world countries kinda look at you kinda strange and then just wave you on through...either that, or have a 5 minute conversation with other screeners trying to figure out what to do with you, THEN send you on your way. But it's really no big deal.

I'm also BK and I always set off the metal-detectors everywhere, just not at the airport and I have the same story for the person with the wand. I have only once been taken to the back room at the airport and I was made to take off my leg and to be honest it didn't bother me. They have a job to do and it's better safe than sorry. I would just recommend that you get there early just in case.
