    Newsweek Story

    Friday, June 6, 2008, 07:02 PM [General]

Did you see this story in Newsweek?

It's about people who suffer from "Body Integrity Identity Disorder," which causes them to want to cut off their own limbs.

The weird thing is, usually after they lose their limb (sometimes they bribe doctors to amputate for them), they like their body better than they did before.

    Is that crazy or what?

    Check it out:

Hi, yeah there was a talk show host in Australia, Andrew Denton, and he had 2 amputees on his show and a guy that had spent 30 years trying to get rid of his leg. It actually angered my husband, but it is a mental illness. Most mental illnesses noone can understand unless they have been there, so we can't judge. They often lead horrible lives with severe depression as they often can't confide in anyone what they are feeling as it is so wrong. It is a terrible illness and ruins lots of lives, but at least over the last 5 years they have found out it is an illness and people that have this disorder can talk with others like them. I don't feel anything nasty towards these sufferers, I just hope they can study more into it and find a cure one day.

    Hi

I am a recent AK Amputee, and saw the article, but there's also another side to the story... and you'd be surprised to learn as I was that a lot of this has to do with psychological disorders, called factitious disability disorder, paraphilia., even Muchausen Syndrome, I am currently chatting with a lady online, who is sexually addicted to guys who are missing a limb, in my case a leg, she is healthy, a cougar, and falls into the dpw category, but she suffers from paraphilia, a sexual attraction to amputees, she's bi-sexual and very aggressive by the sounds of it, and I would probably consider her a borderline stalker, I don't know what to make of it...but I am finding this whole dpw fascinating when it comes to being a new amputee especially as I dig deeper into the research...lol

    Hey All
The idea of actually wanting to cut off a perfectly healthy happy limb is beyond my ability to understand...

They should have to go help new amputees in a vet hospital or something so they better understand what its all about

I've read about this kind of thing before. I honesly can't even comprehend wanting to remove a healthy limb, and I definitely don't think it's something doctors should agree to do. If it's a mental illness that illness should be treated.

You should read The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat! Oliver Sacks does a great job portraying the disorder. After reading it, you can hopefully try and place yourself in the situation...it would be horrifying.
