So, on Feb 9 I'm gonna have knee surgery on my left leg, the one I wear a prosthesis on. I've had ongoing problems with my left knee and several surgeries in the past. They want to take about 10cm of my tibia and move it over a few degrees with a tendon attached to it, then pin it back in. Then in about 6 weeks if they think it is healing normally they are gonna take the pins out. They think this might help stabalize the knee. This is going to leave me on crutches for a very long time, which is not something I'm used to. I live alone and I'm trying to plan ahead to make sure I won't run into any problems getting by. So far there are three things I'm concerned about.
1. Getting to work. According to map quest I park about 1/2 a mile away from my office. This won't be too bad as the weather gets warmer, but right now in MA its really cold and the sidewalks are very icy. I don't know how well I am going to be at crutching a half mile on ice post surgery.
2. Laundry. I live in a tiny efficiency apartment with no full kitchen or laundry. I have to go to a laundry mat to do my laundry. I still haven't figured out the best way to do this while on crutches.
3. Grocery shopping. I guess this probably won't be as bad as laundry, but still seems like it might be a little tricky.
Any advice would be helpful

Jeremiah, about doing your laundry. Try shucking all your clothes into a duffel bag then drag it on the ground behind you into the laundry. Also, when I walk on icy or uneven ground I use a "walking stick" (I hate to call it a cane) that I actually found in the woods and whittled it down myself. Stained it and put a few coats of polyurethane on it and I get tons of compliments. About groceries; use one of those electric jobbies until you can manage on your own. then maybe find a young kid near you, give him a few bucks to haul your stuff into your place.
