What is the point of my cosmetic prosthetis hand ???

    Thursday, July 24, 2008, 06:37 PM [General]

Well..I didn't expect much when I finally took my hand prosthetic home.
Mine is the type that has a thumb hole (it's for my left hand ,I am right
handed )because I lost the four fingers in a car accident ( no fault of
my own, they went through a red light, and they have no assets, and lives
in Government Housing) anyway.. in which they were crushed and had to
     be amputated..So I have a thumb,thank God,and am right handed ,and
of course alive.. Well that accident happened June 11,2007...Anyway..
finally got my prosthetic hand..I imagine the cheap ( but not so cheap
when they charge the insurance company),I paid my deductable..anyway...
it is basically cosmetic.. It is pointless for function, unlike those that use
leg prosthetics because it will help you stand.Well mine gets in the way
when I try to put my hair in a hair clip(my thumb is useful going under
my hair, but when I put that thing on,the fingers that are mostly rigid,
and hardly bend..Granted they look close to real, with finger nails, but
probably they could use a tan to match mine, but that part doesn't
matter to me. I am trying to find a real helpful use for it. I have done
exercise with my remaining thumb to bend in a hook manner improving
on strength .Since I am right handed, I do "ctrl /alt"   that have to both
press together then one on the other side  "delete" on the computer in
a backwards manner by reaching to the left of the keyboard with my
right hand, and my left hand thumb will press the dete tab, since  it only
needs that one tab on that side..Anyway,when I put my hand prosthetic
on..it hindered me doing that, because if I go to press a tab with my
left hand, the ridgid fake fingers get in the way.. And this is also true
for many other things..I imagine I can sit in apple in that hand, but I
would be fearful of cutting the thing, and damage it. And the other
pointless  things..I guess it is cosmetic only.. But when I who it to the
store, and rode the bus,I felt I had more stares with prosthetic then.
.And I was also concerned that they may try to put the change in my
fake hand and it would spill all over the floor..And I do need to go
downstairs sometimes so I am worried that others will rush me if
I am on the side of my lost fingers, expect me to be able to grab the
rail but it can't because it doesn't grasp.Well these may be piddly
whining..but I am looking for some reedeeming  things about this
prosthetis hand.I don't want to put up somewhere but would like
to find real uses for it..So if any of you have this kind of situation
with a prosthetic hand that just gets in the way,and maybe you have
a loner thumb,or something else, feel free to message me with your
     thoughts,advise,etc.. thanks... Kathy =( ^- ^)=
