1yr Post-op and motorcycle anniversary

    Friday, April 6, 2012, 5:52 AM [General]

Last month on March 12, 2012 was my one year anniversary of my major motorcycle crash. My other posts give a good description to what happened and what broke/amputated. So a year later I'm doing pretty good. I just received my 2nd prothesis last month. The day of the final fitting, I walked out of the office without my cane! I was soo excited to walk un-aided again. But it's put alot of pressure on my other "good" bad leg. I have a rod/screws in the Tib. I try and keep my leg on for 8hrs a day. I use a wheelchair to zip around the house at night and early morning. I have reflected back at the 14 surgeries in the last year to put me back together. I've come a long way baby. I went back to the two hospitals and two rehab centers and thanked everyone that had a part in my recovery. Unfortunately I'm getting a divorce because of the accident. It changed my wife and I. But now I get to surround myself with positive people. Anyway, if I can get through the recovery process of an amputation, you can :)

    Blue Jeans Closure

    Monday, November 21, 2011, 3:00 AM [General]

Everyone in my circle of friends and family know I'm a shorts guy. Cargo, Plaid, etc. But I did own one pair of blue jeans that I wore religiously on every motorcycle ride I went on. Until the day I had my motorcycle accident. It seems like the EMT's like to cut things up :) Anyway, 8 months later, I re-bought the same pair from the same store. Closure baby!

    8 Months Post-Op Amputee

    Sunday, November 20, 2011, 3:17 AM [General]

Wow how things have progressed in these 8 months....I just "graduated" from my gait training at physical therapy. Now I'm a member at their gym. Things are going pretty good. I'm still in my first socket although my guy does adjustments here and there. I think I'll be needing my second one in the near future. I'm kinda swimming in it now. The hardest part of my day is putting it on in the morning. Hurts a little. I'm doing 12 minutes on the eliptical machine and 12 minutes on the leg bike at PT. Starting the treadmill on Monday. I went from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane. I think I'll be at the cane stage for awhile. I'm lucky to have a great support system. Family, the PT crew and my Ortho Surgeon. I still need to figure out a goal to accomplish. Most think it will be me riding a motorcycle again BUT I promised my wife of 16yrs that I'm done riding them. Spending almost 100 days in the hospital did it!

    Now the fun part starts!

    Thursday, August 11, 2011, 6:56 PM [General]

Ok, after 93 days in the hospital and then being home for the last 1 1/2 months, the fun begins. I just recieved my 1st leg last week. I have pics posted of what it looks like. It is black carbon fiber shell and a Flex Foot w/ Evo Foot Shell. Up to now I've been in a wheelchair, my couch, or the hospital bed in my house. I just started gait training and am now standing on my new leg. Problem is my "good" leg is actually bad. It's still broken. I originally had 8 Tib/Fib breaks. So now it starts.....

Hello guys and girls. I stumbled on this site last week and liked what I was seeing. OK, about me: I'm 37yrs old. I've been married for almost 16yrs now. I'm a sport bike rider (crotch rockets). I've been riding motorcycles for over 19yrs. Never been in an accident until March 12th of this year. I was in a major motorcycle accident. Due to a bike malfunction, I went off the road going 40mph backwards. I hit two oak trees and a barb wire fence. Then I flew into a creek. I was awake the whole time. Hitting oak trees hurts real bad. lol. My right leg was amputated BKA. A skin graph had to be done on the stump. If that didn't work, it would have been AKA. My left leg was broken in 8 places tib/fib. They wanted to take that off too but it was saved. I spent 10 days in Shock Trauma and 83 days in the hospital/rehab. 4 months later, I still have the boot on the left leg. My clav was busted. A 1 inch piece was missing from the middle. Still non union as of right now. I have the shrinker sock on my right stump right now. I will be fitted soon for my carbon fiber upper and lower post soon. It has a split toe and heal for extra stability. I'm choosing NOT to cover my fake leg. I lost my real leg 4 months ago. I don't want it back. Moving forward instead of looking back :) That's just my opinion. All my moto buddies and my wife & daughter think the post looks bad ass. But I'm a guy. I'm new to all of this. I'm here to get info, make a friend like me (less than four), and live life.
