Its been zonks since I have written, so thought I had better update.....
I finally got my 'running leg' 2 weeks ago. Its totally fab! Now of course I have to learn how to run, which is soooo much harder than I thought it would be. If I am inbetween the parallel bars, I get the movement happening no worries, but as soon as I am on the grass or concrete, my 'good' leg holds back. I am obviously scared of falling, even though I know perfectly well that I will fall a million times in order to get it right. Hmmmmm...any suggestions to 'free my mind?'
Other than that, I have finally joined a gym after being unhappy with the weight I have put on since my accident. I feel excellent. Although, after 20 minutes walking pretty quickly on the treadmill, I have to take off my liner and wipe it down as it is so wet my leg starts to turn around!! Then I go back on for another 20 minutes, do my weights etc. Is there anyway that anyone knows of to control the sweating inside of the liner? I just figured that the more my body gets used to all the exercise, the better it will get.
I wish I had started the gym 2 years ago because I feel terrific. We are going to Europe to see my husbands family and to travel a bit in 6 weeks, so at least I'll be able to walk a lot further before getting tired!
I hope everyone else is doing great and are happy!! Take care xxxx
i'm feeling sooo much better after my previous blog. thanks to everyone who wrote encouraging things. the latest is that i do have to surrender my knee. my prosthetist is fantastic, its otto bock unfortunately. it was a trial knee and it is also a bit faulty....i wouldnt have even known...how do you ever know what is 'normal.' i asked that they gave me til the new year and we are going to get me an ossur knee and hopefully a running leg. it means an extra $6000 which i will probably have to rob a bank for, but this is my LEG!! its worth it.
in australia, we have a public health system. if you need medical care ( emergency ) it doesnt cost anything, but you get the basics. we also have private insurance, so depending on your level of cover, you can get anything within reason. eg. when i had my motorbike accident, technically i was in the wrong, even though i was blinded by the sun, and i did not have private cover...so....all of my hospital care was covered by the public health system ( you pay $300 a year at tax time for this which includes all doctors visits etc ) but i only get a 'basic' leg every 3 years. i pay extra to have a better foot and now a better knee. the public legs are great if i were maybe 60 plus, but im only 30 and love doing fun sports...
i think in america, maybe if you dont have private insurance...bad luck?? am i right?? thats rough!! i have to remember how fortunate i am ( even tho i secretly would kill for a c leg )
so, im in better spirits and its the holiday season and all.
i want to wish everyone a safe holiday season whatever you celebrate.. i personally am not religious, we have xmas, but its all about family and friends and having a great time..oh yeah, and seafood on the bbq and white wine.....: )
stay safe, dont drink and drive...and love the ones you're with...
hi there. I havent been on here for zonks, but today I had bad news...and who better to share it with?? I found out today that I have to give my knee back to the company in Germany that makes them...after having it for over a year!! At first it was a trial knee and they said I could keep it, which was great as I never would be able to afford it! Now, they have changed their minds and want it back, bummer hey?? It's like having a porsche, then having to drive an old old car that barely gets you from a - z. I used to dream of having a c-leg, now I just want to keep my hydraulic....ah well......thats what you get I suppose!!
Anyhoo, I'm in need of a cold glass of wine, so I'll be back soon
Well, yesterday I rode my bike for the first time since my accident! YAY..I can ride a mountain bike!! It was so much easier than I expected and I owe it asll to the training video that someone has on this site ( can't remember who ) my good leg was very tired after, but I felt so exhilarated!! I'm so happy happy happy...........the world is my oyster. Finally a great way to get my fitness back!!
Well Hi again. This site is definitely getting bigger!!
I'm about to go to work, I'm a travel consultant, but I work weird hours, they change every day!!
I've been reading some blogs about the amazing things people have done and overcome since the loss of their limbs etc ( why do we say we have lost a limb?? I know where mine went!! Crazy huh?? ) I remember being told 4 weeks after my accident, I was in rehab, and an AK 50 plus year old lady came to chat to me about what my future would be like. Sounds reassuring? Wrong......
We were talking about all sorts and I asked her if it would ever be possible to walk on the beach again..she said I would never be able to, only to hop with the help of others. This depressed me a great deal. Not that I ever went through depression, I was positive from the start, but it was sad to hear.
A year later I was able to walk on sand, walk down the dodgiest of slopes with soft ground, walk up great hills and the list goes on. This summer I am going to attempt some water sports for the first time since my accident ( I also badly broke my arm, and they were going to amputate that too so I have had to be careful )
Anyhoo, what I'm trying to say is, sure, theres things we can't do......the way we used to!! We just have to adapt the way we do it, and we can!!
