    Phantom pain,Medication and Side effects

Tuesday, November 20, 2007, 09:45 PM EST [General]

Hi, this is for those of us who have endudered and still do endure the nightmare of phantom limb pain (PLP). I am really curious about what medications any of you have been prescribed and the side effects. Even if your not on them anymore. Please do tell. I think it could be helpful to many of us. Maybe you can tell about what your PLP felt or feels like and what meds have been tried if any and what has helped. Also what side effects do you get and is it worth staying on the meds long term.

I really don't want to go into to much depth here. I will lose everyone if i do.I went in for my 68th surgery on Sept 24, 1996. It was suppose to give me a better quality life and less sedentary lifestyle. Well if I would of ever known what my PLP was gonna be. I would still have the decreped leg. This has been an ongoing battle for 11 years and it's way more of an inconvienence than having one leg anyday. The severe pain began 3 days after i was home. It feels just like my foot did when i was in the burn unit for a degloving injury to my entire right leg fom mid thigh to mid foot. Complete loss of heel.Multiple other injuries. My foot feels like it's in a downwards position,on fire, with pirahna attacking it, with a semi truck on top and sorta ice cold while feeling on fire. Over 15 different meds have been tried with numerous side effects. The most helpful is methadone and cymbalta. I really want to find out others side effects, whether you at at rest, or active. Does it change and if you ever did go off the meds to just go back to the life draining, mind blowing Pain. I look at PLP as F-in Insanity. Thank goodness it has become more tolerable but at times it's a 10 and i hate the medication side effects. Please respond.Thank you

    Hi staci,
may God give u the strength to deal with your pain. 68 surgeries, i think that is a record. man i thought mine was a high number...
but more to come about that later...
for my PLP i was prescribed cybmalta too, but due to its ill effects, and potential for long term need, i switched over to Neurontin (im not sure i spelled that right). it started at 100mg 4 times daily, and gradually went up o 600mg 4 times. i started freaking out at this point cuz i was nearing the maximum allowable dosage for it. I started skipping doses in an attempt to weaned myself off the drug and got severe restlessness. at one point i went 4 days without any rest...but eventually i started improving...ive stopped taking it completely for the last 6 months. i do get bouts of PLP occasionally but for the most part i am free of it. i had several side effects, but am not sure which were caused by what drug. For 18 months i was pumped up with a variety of stuff. But it is all behind me now. I'm sure you will not have to deal with it much longer. stay strong and try to occupy ur self with anything else when u feel the pain coming on.
    may God be with u.
ps the active ingredients name is gaba-pentyn

Hey Stace, I was on the Methadone for about 8 months. I just got off about a month ago. I had some withdrawl issues with it though. Kinda like coming off heroin. Got chills, stomach aches. But definatley worth it for the PLP I had. I was also on Neurotin at the same time. how's the Cymbalta working for you? I still have some PLP. NOTHING like what it was...I'm off everything but maybe a pill or 2 of nuerotin a day. Usually at night after I've worn my leg for about 8-9 hours, then take it off. then the nerves start kicking. I'm not sure if it's so much PLP, or just messed up nerves. Hope you're doing ok :)

Hi Staci, I know how you feel, PLP is a curse, for me it is so close to the pain I had before my amputation [RSD effects the same nervous system that causes our PLP] that it can be hard to tell the difference. I am finding that gabapentin helps, while it does not give complete relief it does make things more tolerable. You can find good information on it here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gab...
I take 600mg morning and afternoon, and then 900mg before going to bed. I have also found a good soak in our spa bath can help, but not always. I also have tried gentle massage, this is good as it seems to interfare with the nerve signals, however it works best if someone else is doing it, this is not always practical. Like you I am always searching for a better solution, stay in touch.
    Love and blessings.

Not something a lot of folks may agree with... but I live in one of the 12 states that support medicinal marijuana. I have a proper and legal Doctors Authorization. I don't think anything will ever take the PLP completely away, but using my meds regularly keeps the phantom pain occurrences minimal and/or bearable when the do come... except for times that I really push myself past my physical limits.

    Hope that helps some.

I know how you feel. I deal with phantom pain all the time. I am using gababpentin for it, with what I feel is little result. I pf course have the heartburn from it. I also feel I am experiancing memory loss from it, but the docs say that is not a side effect.
Every waking moment for me, and a good deal of the time I wake up at night as well, is a different experiance in pain. At the best times its a rushing tingling "asleep" feeling, and the worst is the moment of injury with excruciating pain in my ankle and foot. I have developed several nervous ticks that come on when I am experiancing it...which is most of the time.
I have yet to find anything that really lessens the pains. My docs also removed me from pain meds a few weeks ago. I am going to have to call the clinic and see if they can refer me out to pain management or something. This constant pain is infuriating, taking my sanity slowly away.

I wish I was as lucky as others who can get medical marijuana. Smoking a good joint really helps, but of course its illegal.

Hell, if you find out anything that works, let me know. I haven't been injured as long as you by any means....well you know.
    Good luck
