walking at frist and then jogging.I went to day and got a suspention sleave.

Now this is what i need help with,My leg is bowed quite a bit as a result of

the injury. My porstetic is curved to acommedate for the bow.

My leg man is worried that I could break the leg by jogging on it.

What I need to know is , Do any of you jog, and have any of you suffered this

kind of set back.Is jogging gonna cause more pain than it is worth.

Should I forget about jogging and just sit back and wait on the heart attack.

Someone please give me your thoughts on this.

    G'day Joey,

You don't need to jog to get the best benefit from being mobile. Walking is actually better for you and there's also less impact on you and the prosthetic leg. (And also on your heart!)

I don't have bowed legs, so can't help you on that front. I would make the point though that the mechanical leg should be configured for mechanical safety over the asthetic looks.

I did get to jog and run on a treadmill when I was at my best. I could get up to about 15kph but never got to the point of being able to sustain it for 15 minutes (A goal I set myself but have never got to achieve).

I hope you get to achieve all the targets you set for yourself...

    Hi there!

I have trouble jogging, but that's because my stump starts sweating so much that, even with my suspension sleeve, my prosthetic leg starts slipping real bad. So, until I find some way to reduce the sweating, I have to find some other means of exercise.

Right now, I'm bicycling. However, I'm building up my endurance while getting ready for a move where I'll be near hiking trails and can start hiking. I'll still have sweating problems, but it won't become as immediate, and it won't thus hurt to stop and dry off the sweat with a towel.

You also might want to try swimming. Jogging is great, but depending on your leg and other factors, it can sometimes be a problem.

You also might want to try a second opinion. That never hurts either.

I tend to agree with Mike. Vigorous walking can be as beneficial as jogging and puts a lot less stress on your joints and your stump. I'm RAK, and I like the treadmill approach and walk 1-1/2 to 2 miles 4-5 times a week at a gym. The treadmill platform absorbs some of the shock and gives less impact than walking or jogging in the street. If you need more work, you can simply increase the incline. I usually walk at 3.5-4 mph for about half an hour, at which point I start to lose control of the leg because of sweat. I always find a machine with a fan, because I find the best way to reduce sweat is to keep the rest of my body cool. A gym provides a lot of other opportunities for exercise as well, and you are more motivated when you are around other people who are exercising. -Chas.

Hey man don't give up on the joggin yet.. I can jog a little bit right now.. I'm workin on the distance. I do the treadmill as well and that's very beneficial. The bike is as well. Just give it time and make sure u have ur prosty work with u. And fast walkin really works.. Hang in there.
