advice on bk prosthesis..can't seem to get it right...

    Hey guys!!

I need some advice...please!!  I've had my 2nd prosthesis since 2/08 and it looks like its time for a smaller one.  I went to a prosthetist about 50 miles from my home the first time...I don't know what kind of leg I have...I used Hanger the first time, then moved away from there...my leg seems to bow out a bit...both prosthetists told me that my amputation was shorter than most and that's the way my leg turns and that there's not much they can do...I'm not sure if they know...anyway, I'm still walking with a pretty good limp...I got my first leg in October of -07 and I expected to be walking better than this...I was hoping for no limp...I don't know anyone with a bka besides on here...so can anyone tell me if all of this is normal?   Is the bowing out normal?  Do most of you guys walk without a limp?  And I am trying to decide whether to go back to Hanger (there's one not too far from where I live now)...Any input????  Thanks, I would appreciate any advice at all..  Trish

    Hi Trish:
Well I am as high of an amputee as you can get (R.HemiP), so I won't have exact advice for you, other than to say - BE PERSISTENT!
My prosthetist was very comfortable in the way he did things. A few years ago I begged for a a C-Leg and he kept telling me that HPs don't do well on them. I insisted. After awhile, I realized he just was not up on the technology. I finally have one (this year!) and it is absolutely amazing.
Prosthetists are wonderful people, but just like doctors, they are just people and have their limitations. The only one that will look out for you the best - is you. Do your homework, know what your options are, and then take care of yourself... like you would someone you love very much.

    Trish-
Doesn't sound unusal that you would need another prostesis to me. I received my 1st on in 2/08 also. Had another one in 4/08. Got my 3rd on 7/08 (suction socket so it can be made somewhat smaller as I continue to shrink). As for the bowing, that sounds like an alignment problem. It is funny that you posted about your limp because I was having a similar issue until they got my alignment corrected this week and now you can hardly tell. I have a great physical therapy group that I work with to get my alignment dialed in.

As to which prostetic company you should work with, I would suggest choosing someone that will be there for you, ie someone close enough that you can make appointments with that are not too far out of your way. What method do you use to hold you prostesis on? This may have something to do with your comfort and the way it fits also.

Hang in there you will find one that you like and it will be all the difference in the world.

Trish, not unusually to have a few prosthesis, specifically in first years. I am also a BKA and have not really had big problems with the legs. The bowing seems unusual and you should try to get this adjusted. I have been walking without a noticeable limb for many years now. Key is to get the prothesis correctly fitted, regularly checked and for yourself make sure you keep in shape !! Keep up, Ve
